A furnace that suddenly starts making unusual noises can be alarming. Some sounds indicate minor issues that can wait for a scheduled repair, while others signal potentially dangerous conditions requiring immediate action.
This guide will help you identify common furnace noises, understand what they mean, and know when it's safe to keep running your system versus when you should shut it down and call for emergency service.
Furnace Noise Diagnosis Guide
Banging or Popping
High SeverityLikely Cause: Delayed ignition, dirty burners, or expanding/contracting ductwork
Recommended Action: Turn off immediately if loud or repeated. Call for service.
Screeching or Squealing
Medium-High SeverityLikely Cause: Worn blower belt, motor bearing issues, or shaft problems
Recommended Action: Turn off and schedule service soon. Running may cause more damage.
Grinding or Metal-on-Metal
High SeverityLikely Cause: Blower motor bearings failing or broken motor mount
Recommended Action: Turn off immediately. Continued operation will cause major damage.
Rattling
Low-Medium SeverityLikely Cause: Loose panels, screws, or debris in the system
Recommended Action: Check for loose panels. If persists, schedule service.
Humming
Low SeverityLikely Cause: Normal transformer noise or minor electrical issue
Recommended Action: Usually normal. If loud or new, schedule inspection.
Clicking (Continuous)
Medium SeverityLikely Cause: Relay problems, ignition issues, or control board problems
Recommended Action: If clicking continues without ignition, turn off and call.
Whistling
Low-Medium SeverityLikely Cause: Airflow restriction, dirty filter, or duct leaks
Recommended Action: Check and replace filter. If persists, schedule duct inspection.
Booming
High SeverityLikely Cause: Gas buildup igniting (delayed ignition) - potentially dangerous
Recommended Action: Turn off immediately and call for emergency service.
